Graduate, The (40th Anniversary Collector's Edition) (1967)
Format : DVD R1 NTSC
Release Date : 9/11/2007
Price: (USD) : $21.95

Synopsis:
Ben has recently graduated college, with his parents now expecting great things from him. At his "Homecoming" party, Mrs. Robinson, the wife of his father's business partner, has Ben drive her home, which leads to an affair between the two. The affair eventually ends, but comes back to haunt him when he finds himself falling for Elaine, Mrs. Robinson's daughter.

Nominated for seven Academy Awards and winner for Best Director, this ground breaking and "wildly hilarious" (The Boston Globe) social satire launched the career of two-time Oscar-winner Dustin Hoffman and cemented the reputation of acclaimed director Mike Nichols. Pulsating with the rebellious spirit of the '60s and a haunting score sung by Simon and Garfunkel, The Graduate is truly a "landmark film" (Leonard Maltin). Shy Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) returns home from college with an uncertain future. Then the wife of his father's business partner, the sexy Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), seduces him, and the affair only deepens his confusion. That is, until he meets the girl of his dreams (Katharine Ross). But there's one problem: she's Mrs. Robinson's daughter!

As a lot of my friends enter the dangerous 40s... I see this scenario becoming common! 40ish women dating 20ish men... A win win for both? Maybe, it depends... everything is relative...

So, what do you think?

In the days of Cheeni Kum and the 40th anniversary of Mrs Robinson, do you think this is right? Or is it wildly immoral?

I'm all ears... Write in!

Love,
Jhilmil

Hugely immoral - and downright greedy ! You refer to The Graduate and Cheeni Kum in the same breath - can't do that. You have to make up your mind. Younger kids or mature guys ?

Welcome to 40 :-)

But do you read Osho? He's all for greed!

Reading Tantra by him these days... and he says to experience all energy without boundaries imposed by society...

40 is tough... the hormones are going crazy!

Jhilmil

PS: What if I don't want to make up my mind, and want young kids as well as mature guys???!!

Good question, why not both ? Have fun !

But as an academic point - what if you had to choose ? Would you go the Mrs Robinson way or the other ?

And do keep in mind, 40 is just a stepping stone to 50 - that's when life really gets fun !

Hi Hemant:

Life is all energy, I feel... At some times, I may need the energy of younger guys, and at others the calming influence of older ones... But I hate the generalisation that young guys may have more energy and older guys less...

At this point in my life, I am depleted, therefore guys with more energy would make more sense...

But, sadly, Hemant, all this is hypothetical... I have a possessive and HUGE husband... who imprisons me... and I am getting a little restive now. Spirituality makes you not conducive to chains...

Love,
Jhilmil
